Faced with technical limitations in their previous systems, Cornwall IFCA turned to applied acoustics after discussions with the University of Exeter, whose researchers had been impressed with the performance of the Easytrak Alpha USBL system. With this recommendation, Cornwall IFCA secured funding and upgraded their equipment—transforming the accuracy and efficiency of their marine survey operations.
The Easytrak Alpha has significantly improved the precision of Cornwall IFCA’s survey tools. The system provides highly accurate positioning for video and stills surveys, enabling the team to overlay camera frame positions with minimal margin for error. This level of precision represents a step-change from previous methods that relied on broader confidence zones based on platform position.
Early results have been eye-opening: the team was surprised by the discrepancies revealed between platform and frame positions, underscoring the value of this advanced technology. Looking ahead, Cornwall IFCA plans to expand Easytrak Alpha’s use with their sidescan sonar, towed camera systems, and micro ROVs—eliminating the need for estimated laybacks and enhancing underwater navigation and data integrity.
