SmartMyBoat Navigator enhances navigation and monitoring via the Roku platform; when paired with Actisense W2K-1 or WGX-1 gateways, it seamlessly accesses onboard NMEA 2000 data over Wi-Fi. Read more >>
NMEA 2000 devices connect to a vessel’s central N2K backbone cable, which supplies both power and data communication. This shared network supports seamless data exchange, enabling Roku devices to display a wide range of instrument readings while facilitating integrated instrument functionality.
The plug-and-play nature of NMEA 2000, combined with Actisense’s Wi-Fi and Ethernet gateways, ensures reliable connectivity to Roku-enabled displays, transforming existing onboard screens into smart Roku TVs.
The SmartMyBoat app offers three main interface screens: live vessel tracking, environmental and weather data, and comprehensive engine and system monitoring. Each screen is user-friendly and allows for customization of settings and configurations to suit individual preferences.
All subscription services are managed through the Roku Channel Store. Users can easily set up, manage, or cancel their subscriptions directly through their Roku account or from the Roku home screen.
The app is currently available in English in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Future updates will expand availability to additional markets, including France, Germany, Spain, and countries in Latin America.
SmartMyBoat Navigator Features
The Live Vessel Tracking screen displays real-time metrics such as speed over ground, speed over water, apparent and true wind speeds, rate of turn, heading (course), and both apparent and true wind angles. This data provides users with accurate insights for safer and more efficient navigation.
The Environmental and Weather screen offers a range of data points including air temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, water temperature, wind force (using the Beaufort scale), and sunrise/sunset times. A compass heading is included, with an enhanced version expected in version 1.2. A map view is also available, currently limited to level 3 due to platform package size restrictions.
The Engine and System Monitoring screen tracks essential engine performance and onboard system metrics. These include engine RPM, temperature, warnings and alerts, operating hours, and levels for water and fuel (up to two tanks each), as well as battery levels (up to four batteries). This enables users to keep a close eye on vital systems while underway.
Head of Commercial at Actisense, Justin Cohen, said, “This is a neat, innovative way to let boaters enjoy a very low cost means of viewing vital navigation and device data on any onboard television. Roku streaming devices are available at under £30, which – coupled with our W2K-1 or WGX-1 Wi-Fi gateways, give that instant visibility of NMEA data in a very plug & play way!”
Creators of SmartMyBoat Navigator, Igor Sestanj and Dejan Jankovic, also stated, “We are passionate about providing innovative marine technology for all: our team specialize in developing solutions that seamlessly integrate into both recreational and commercial vessel systems. From leisure to logistics, we engineer advanced marine solutions, catering to the unique requirements of recreational and commercial vessels.”
