Discover cutting-edge solutions from 11 leading global suppliers
Saab has secured a contract with Ocean Infinity for its latest advancement in subsea robotics – an electric work-class remotely operated vehicle (eWROV).
Under the newly signed agreement, Saab will deliver 10 units of the electric work-class remotely operated vehicle, with the potential for additional orders, to Ocean Infinity – a leader in robotic and uncrewed marine technologies. This marks a significant milestone in the deployment of electric subsea systems and aligns with both companies’ commitment to advancing sustainable and autonomous marine operations.
Developed by Saab Seaeye, the eWROV represents the most powerful electric ROV in the company’s extensive portfolio. Engineered over a four-year R&D program, the vehicle sets a new benchmark for electric work-class systems, offering capabilities comparable to traditional 250 hp hydraulic ROVs – but with a markedly lower environmental footprint and reduced long-term operating costs.
The new eWROV is designed for demanding applications across offshore energy, ocean science, and defense sectors. It incorporates Saab Seaeye’s advanced iCON intelligent system architecture, enabling high levels of autonomy and operational efficiency. Its fully electric design eliminates the need for oil-based hydraulics, significantly reducing the risk of environmental contamination and supporting cleaner marine operations.
Ocean Infinity, known for developing the world’s largest fleet of robotic and uncrewed vessels, will integrate the eWROV into its pioneering Armada fleet. This deployment supports Ocean Infinity’s broader goal of revolutionizing offshore services with technology-driven, low-emission alternatives. The Armada platform promises up to 90% reductions in emissions compared to conventional offshore vessels, highlighting the environmental advantage of next-generation electric ROVs.
Magnus Lewis-Olsson, Chairman of Saab UK, said, “Ocean Infinity’s order is the largest in Saab Seaeye’s history and highlights the need for intelligent, adaptable and flexible underwater robotics. The eWROV is more efficient and cleaner than the hydraulic alternatives and it also requires less human involvement and will play an important role in future autonomous vessel fleets. We are confident the eWROV will serve Ocean Infinity well.”
Dan Hook, Ocean Infinity Chief Technology Officer, added, “Lessening the environmental impact of operations at sea is the main driver behind the development of Armada. The all-electric eWROV, in addition to our already low-emission vessels, will enable us to support our customers with infrastructure integrity projects in the most environmentally responsible way. The eWROVs will form an important part of our Armada architecture; through integration with our dynamic payload controller, we’ll be able to deploy and operate them anywhere in the world from our Remote Control Centres.”
The partnership between Saab and Ocean Infinity is seen as a a pivotal step toward greener, more intelligent underwater operations – and reflects a shared vision of sustainable innovation in ocean technology.
